Entry-level Laborer
We have two vacancies in the Department of Public Works for an entry-level laborer. All employees holding this position are expected to obtain a CDL Class B within six months of full-time employment. The primary job duties are as follows:
- Collects refuse throughout the City as assigned by supervision.
- Completes all necessary reports as required by supervision.
- Operates and maintains motor vehicles needed to perform job functions.
- Prior to CDL licensing: Performs duties which do not require a CDL to support the operations of the Department of Public Works.
Minimum requirements:
- High school graduate/GED
- Valid, non-restricted Michigan driver's license.
- Must be able to pass DOT physical exam (required for CDL) and must be able to pass criminal background.

Zamboni Driver - Arena Maintenance Worker
Overview: This is a NEW part-time position under the primary supervision of the Operations Manager. This individual shall primarily assist in weekday, business hour operations at the Kennedy Recreation Center. The Arena Maintenance Worker will receive supervision and assignments from the Operations Manager, Facilities Manager, and Parks and Recreation Director, however, must use proper initiative, discretion, and specialized knowledge in the attainment of desired objectives.
Examples of Work: (Note: These examples are merely illustrations of the types of work that may be performed in this position and do not include all duties that may be assigned to this position.)
- Operates Zamboni to resurface ice surfaces for user groups
- Assists in maintaining high-quality ice surfaces
- Responsible for ice maintenance of all three arenas. This includes measuring ice thickness, operating the ice edger, chipping and edging ice surfaces, dry cutting ice surfaces, and other techniques used to maintain ice surfaces.
- Washes and cleans Zambonis
- Maintains dasher board conditions/advertisements
- Maintains cleanliness, organization, and equipment stock of the Zamboni room
- Assists in ice removal, cleaning, painting, and installing
- Assists in general building maintenance tasks as assigned by both the Operations Manager and Facilities Manager.
- Assist in day-to-day operations of the Kennedy Recreation Center when needed
- Occasionally fills in on evening Zamboni shifts as needed
- Interacts with customers and part-time staff on a regular basis
- Detect and report property or equipment defects
- Frequently positions one’s self low to the ground, in tight spaces, and/or uncomfortable positions.
- Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder or other equipment to service equipment or items attached to walls and ceilings.
- Serve as a liaison between the general public and the City of Trenton Parks and Recreation Department.
- Perform other duties as necessary Minimum Qualifications
- G.E.D. or High School Diploma required
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license
- Prior experience working in an ice rink preferred
- Prior experience in Zamboni operations preferred
- Must work effectively and pleasantly with all members of the public and other employees.
- Must have a flexible schedule to work nights and weekends as needed
- Effectively communicate with other staff members
- Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to work in a cold environment with the possibility of loud noises.
Additional Information: The schedule will vary by season and based on department needs. This position will primarily be scheduled to weekday hours during the parks and recreation department’s business hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday. Position may work later into the evening during peak times. This is a year-round position.
Starting Wage: $14.20/hour
Ice Rink Attendant / Skate Guard
Overview: Responsible for the safe operation of facility programming with an emphasis on our public skating sessions and upkeep of the ice arena including sweeping, cleaning, and other custodial duties including restroom cleanliness.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in keeping all areas of the facility neat, clean and safe at all times. These duties include sweeping and mopping the rink restrooms, locker rooms, shower areas, lobby, meeting rooms, bleachers and removing trash, cleaning rink glass, etc.
- Maintain rental skates, boots, and monitor if blade and/or boot repair is needed.
- Adding/removing hockey nets from the ice rinks, unlock team locker rooms and retrieve hockey pucks if needed for daily events and activities.
- Monitor all public session skating events both on and off the ice.
- Provide excellent customer service at all times and ensure that all policies are properly implemented.
- Adhering to all policies and procedures that are implemented.
- Complete any necessary paperwork such as accident/incident reports and inventory.
- Operation of the point of sale system.
- Maintain a professional appearance at all times.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be 15 years of age or older.
- Ability to ice skate is preferred.
- Flexible schedules to include nights, weekends and some holidays.
- Must be able to successfully perform the essential functions of this job that are physically demanding.
- Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in a cold environment.
Concession Attendant
Overview: Under direction of the scheduled supervisor, provide excellent customer service to the ice arena concession patrons. Take food orders and prepare food. Stock concession supplies and food. Cash register operations using the point of sale system. Maintain concession area in a sanitary and organized manner.
Responsibilities:
- Organize, store and rotate food items and supplies.
- Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of facility, equipment and surrounding areas.
- Operation of the point of sale system.
- Responsible for cash register operations to include accurately collecting and depositing money, selling concessions and completing deposit slips.
- Ensure quality of products and accurate service of all food and beverage items.
- Providing prompt, efficient and courteous service to all patrons.
- Reporting any needed repairs to the shift supervisor.
- Following policies and procedures established for concession operation and employee conduct and practices.
- Complete any necessary paperwork such as accident/incident reports and inventory.
- Maintain a professional appearance at all times.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be 15 years of age or older.
- Flexible schedules to include nights, weekends and some holidays.

Rink Supervisor
Overview: We are actively seeking a motivated, dependable person for the position of Rink Supervisor. Flexibility and customer service oriented is a must. Prior ice rink experience, management, cashiering, and/or heavy equipment operation is a plus. Qualified candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs. and be over 18 years of age.
Responsibilities:
- The Rink Supervisor will assist the rink manager and operations coordinator with daily ice arena operations such as planning and implementation of associated work tasks as well as supervise the staff to ensure proper completion of tasks.
- Listen, communicate, and work effectively with guests, staff, supervisors and management in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.
- Establish tasks to ensure a clean workplace, this includes stocking supplies and maintaining clean restrooms and public areas.
- Assist staff members with proper work methods and standards, monitor work quality, insure adherence to time and break schedules, safe work practices and provide performance feedback.

Youth Program Supervisor
Summary: We are in search of a part-time Youth Program Supervisor to assume responsibility for the planning and supervision of youth programs within our Parks and Recreation Department. The objective is to provide a safe, enjoyable, and educational experience for children and teenagers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and administer engaging youth programs.
- Supervise program staff and maintain safety protocols.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and maintain parent communication.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree is desirable, or working towards one.
- Prior experience working with children and teens.
- Proficiency in organization and communication.
- First Aid and CPR certification or a willingness to obtain it.

Senior Program Supervisor
