Trenton Summer Employment Opportunities (1)

Our Parks & Recreation Department has many opportunities for those seeking summer employment.  Employment begins in May. Qualifications and pay depends on the specific job. 

SNAP (Special Needs Activities Program) is a unique 6-week program that serves approximately 30 young people with cognitive impairments. The day camp runs Monday through Friday, and it provides participants with educational and recreational activities in the Downriver area. 


FULL-TIME POSITIONS

Firefighter/Paramedic

The City of Trenton is currently accepting applications for full-time Firefighter/Paramedic and/or full-time Firefighter/EMT-Basic with the Trenton Fire Department. Applicants must have completed Fire 1, Fire 2, and be certified minimally as an EMT-Basic at the time of hire. CPAT must be obtained within the probationary period. Applicants must meet all City employment standards, including an excellent driving record. Selected candidates must successfully complete a thorough background investigation, oral interview, physical exam including drug screen, and psychological exam.


Wages start at $45,515 for a FF/EMT-Basic, $49,664 for FF/Paramedic, and reach a maximum of $70,410 after 5 years of service as a FF/Paramedic. A comprehensive benefits package is provided including health, dental, optical, life insurance, and a defined benefit pension plan. 


Applicants hired as a FF/EMT-Basic will have 9 months, or 2 NREMT testing attempts, whichever is first, to obtain a Paramedic license.

  • Current Michigan Paramedic License or National Registry Paramedic - within 9 months of employment

Building Inspector

The City of Trenton is seeking qualified applicants for the position of full-time Building Inspector to perform inspections and office work necessary to secure compliance with housing, building, zoning and miscellaneous ordinances that are enforced through the City of Trenton's Building Department. This job involves responsibility for inspecting new and existing residential commercial projects and reviews construction documents for compliance with ordinances regarding health, safety and welfare. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Inspects buildings to assure or gain compliance with health, safety and welfare standards specified by code;
  • Issues instructions and orders to property owners and contractors on correcting code;
  • Maintains records and prepares reports related to each particular area of code compliance;
  • Interprets specific codes, inspects properties and as necessary issues violations and court appearance tickets;
  • Works in conjunction with city attorney in preparation of court cases;
  • Performs office work as needed and performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of building construction, materials and methods;
  • Ability to read construction documents;
  • Experience in interpreting various codes, both municipal and state, related to construction and maintenance of buildings;
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relation with city department employees, contractors, other public agencies and the public;
  • Working knowledge and ability to learn and operate computers and associated software.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old;
  • High school diploma/GED;
  • Must also have valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license at time of application;
  • Minimum of four years experience in general building construction as a contractor, skilled worker, a person in charge of construction, or a combination thereof.
  • Must have certification by the State of Michigan as a building inspector and plan reviewer or provisional registration by the State of Michigan as a building inspector and plan reviewer within 90 days of employment. Full registration is required within three years of employment. 
  • Must pass criminal background, drug and alcohol pre-employment tests and physical examination.

Salary: $62,984 to 73,683 DOQ

PART-TIME POSITIONS

Zamboni Driver 

Overview: Responsible for driving the Zamboni correctly and safely to ensure and maintain acceptable ice conditions. Our drivers will also assist in the general maintenance and upkeep of the ice arena including sweeping, cleaning, and other custodial duties including restroom cleanliness. Successful candidates will be trained completely on the operation and daily maintenance of the Zamboni. 

Responsibilities:

  • Operate and drive the Zamboni ice resurfacing machine, edge conditioning, and other motorized equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of ice cuts, blade changes, and preventative maintenance.
  • Operate the scoreboard. Training will be provided.
  • Adding/removing hockey nets from the ice rinks, unlock team locker rooms and retrieve hockey pucks if needed for daily events and activities.
  • Monitor all public session skating events both on and off the ice.
  • Complete any necessary paperwork such as accident/incident reports and inventory.
  • Participate in keeping all areas of the facility neat, clean and safe at all times. These duties include sweeping and mopping the rink restrooms, locker rooms, shower areas, lobby, meeting rooms, bleachers and removing trash, cleaning rink glass, etc.
  • Offer excellent customer service to all patrons. Greet customers with a smile and respond to their needs in a kind and courteous manner.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Flexible schedules to include nights, weekends and some holidays.
  • Must be highly motivated to learn new skills, (ice resurfacing, ice edging), that are essential for a successful rink operation.
  • Must be able to successfully perform the essential functions of this job that are physically demanding. An ability to interact and communicate well with others is essential.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively. This will include the ability to complete daily reports. 
  • Be able to follow safety guidelines and exercise good judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in a cold environment.

 Starting Wage: $13/hour
