LED Street Light Conversion Project

The City of Trenton owns and maintains 161 ornamental street lights within the downtown area along W Jefferson and St. Joseph Avenue. 

Efficiency & Energy Saving Bulbs

These street lights currently operate using high-pressure sodium bulbs, which have been surpassed by light-emitting diode (LED) technology in terms of energy efficiency, lighting uniformity, and useful life. The City of Trenton has recently been awarded an Advanced Lighting Technology (ALTD) grant to demonstrate and promote advanced lighting technologies. Through the use of these grant funds, the City of Trenton will be retrofitting the existing 161 ornamental lights within the downtown area with LED technology. The LED retrofits will replace the existing high-pressure sodium bulb and ballast within the glass globes. The LED will provide a whiter, brighter light that will improve visibility, safety while lowering energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Reducing the Annual Energy Consumption

With the completion of this project, the City of Trenton anticipates it will reduce the annual energy consumption of the street lights by approximately 60%. The LED fixtures will also cost less to maintain because they have a life expectancy exceeding 50,000 hours which is over three times longer then the existing fixtures.

The proposed lighting retrofits are expected to start in April, with completion by June 2012.
